Artist's Description
Shay #2, built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1928, serial #3320, pulls out of the Cass Depot for a scenic tourist trip up Cheat Mountain to Whittaker Station and upward to Bald Knob on Back Allegheny Mountain in West Virginia.
The Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. The locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used in Cass during that time, and in the rainforests of British Columbia for more than a half-century. Many of the passenger cars are old logging flat cars that have been refurbished.
Cass is the home to the world’s largest fleet of geared Shay locomotives. Five Shays, one Heisler, and one Climax reside here. The legendary turn-of-the-century class C-80 Shay #5 has been toiling up Cheat Mountain for nearly 115 years, making it one of the oldest engines in continuous service on its original line, and the oldest operable Shay in existence!

From images of nature and my surroundings growing up in northern Germany, to photo-journalism in Hamburg, Germany. I always gravitated toward a career in photography. Immigrating to the United States in the 1970s, I built a reputation in portrait photography, and ran a...

I was on this historical train at least 25 years ago. Nicely composed, eye follows from the bright colored car through the engine and up through the flow and curve of the smoke. You were smart enough to position yourself well clear of the smoke.

Thank you very much, Frank!
