Description
Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the abstract foreground with the Panamint Mountain Range in the background at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada, USA.
A crust of of polygon-shaped clay sporadically appears along the lowest floor areas of the dune field. These are a remnant from an ancient lakebed, once 600 feet deep, that covered the valley millions of years ago. Mesquite bushes grow around these low points and their thicket provides a habitat for desert cottontail and whitetail antelope squirrel, among other desert animals.
Established on October 24, 1994, Death Valley National Park is a beautiful but challenging landscape where unique wildlife have developed ingenious adaptations to the arid, harsh environment. Located in both California and Nevada, it’s the largest national park in the lower 48 states and has nearly 1,000 miles of roads that provide access to both popular and remote locations in the park.

Outstanding shot Jurgen. Excellent composition. I did not see this or anything worthwhile to make into a good photo where the clay polygons were seen. I was so disappointed.

good contrast from foreground through middle ground to background providing flow and depth, Jurgen.
