Description
A beautiful American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) takes flight into a gorgeous blue sky in Rios Lagartos, Yucatan, Mexico.
American flamingos are one of the largest species of flamingo. Found in the Caribbean and along the northern coast of South America, these extraordinarily social birds live in flocks that sometimes number in the thousands. A pigment in their food gives their feathers their flamboyant pink color.
Río Lagartos is located at a lagoon in the Yucatan, the Ria Lagartos, which is part of a natural reserve. This makes it an ideal place for birdwatching.

Wow! You may not believe this, but I've never actually seen a flamingo before and to see one in flight is such a thrilling adventure. Beautifully shot with its long legs held tightly together and its very long neck, still you cannot mistake that beak! Wonderful photograph, Jurgen. I like it a lot! :-) Maggie
