Description
Hierve el Agua (Spanish for "the water boils") are natural rock formations in the Mexican state of Oaxaca that resemble cascades of water. This is one of the natural pools and in the next image "Hierve el Agua Full Cascada" you see how the "waterfall" looks from the valley below.
The site is located about 70 km east of Oaxaca city in the municipality of San Lorenzo Albarradas, with a narrow, winding unpaved road leading to the site. It consists of two rock shelves or cliffs which rise between fifty and ninety meters from the valley below. These white rock formations look like waterfalls. They are created by fresh water springs, whose water is over-saturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals. As the water drips over the cliffs, the excess minerals are deposited, much like the way stalactites are formed in caves. One of the cliffs, called the "cascada chica" (small waterfall) or the Amphitheatre, contains two large artificial pools for swimming as well as a number of small natural pools. One of the artificial pools is very near the edge of the cliff.

Very nice! Remember going this place on a local bus back in 1998 after seeing a not v good postcard of it in Oaxaca, and staying for a few days as it was much more impressive and extensive than the card suggested

Love the starkness of the tree coming from the warmth of the rocks and the color of the water is amazing.
