Description
I photographed the bloom of this Scarlet Hedgehog (Echinocereus coccineus) also known as Claret Cup Cactus or Scarlet Beehive Cactus on a trail behind the Horsethief Campground in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.
This beautiful scarlet cactus can be seen in clusters several feet across. The bright green stigma stands out against the scarlet petals. This cactus can also grow in shallow depressions in rocks or out of cracks in a cliff face. Blooming in mid-spring, it has a profusion of scarlet, hummingbird-attracting flowers held over a mound of tight clustering stems.
