Description
This Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) seems to enjoy the beautiful spring color provided by its perch, a Red Quince bush (Chaenomeles speciosa), on a farm in Summers County, West Virginia. The unusual white head of the sparrow, Leucism, refers to an abnormality in the deposition of pigment in feathers. There is some disagreement as to whether the condition is genetic or caused by pigment cells that were damaged during development.

This is a beautiful photo of a very interesting bird. This Chipping Sparrow is partially leucistic, meaning that some of its plumage is white, but not all. In this case, it’s the throat and forehead. Interesting!
