Description
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and its reflection photographed at a pond in Estero Llano Grande State Park, Weslaco, Texas. More solitary and often more secretive than the Black-crowned Night-Heron, the Yellow-crowned is still quite common in parts of the southeast. Particularly in coastal regions, often feeds by day as well as by night.
This heron is a compact, strong flier with populations on the mainland as well as islands from the Galapagos to the Lesser Antilles.
Although they take prey such as fish, frogs, and mollusks, this bird is a crustacean specialist and its range and seasonal status reflect the availability of prey such as land and shore crabs and crayfish.
