Artist's Description
A Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) stops before crossing the road after catching his favorite prey - a lizard. I captured this scene in Falcon State Park near Roma, Texas.
The most famous bird in the southwest, featured in folklore and cartoons, known by its long tail and expressive crest. The Roadrunner walks and runs on the ground, flying only when necessary. It can run 15 miles per hour, probably with much faster spurts when chasing a fast-running lizard or other prey. Its prowess as a rattlesnake fighter has been much exaggerated, but it does eat a remarkable variety of smaller creatures.
About Jurgen Lorenzen
Photography, to me, involves seeing the light and capturing the moment: the colorful illumination in the sky just before sunrise; bright sunlight dancing on the bubbling current, the glint in the eye of a mockingbird, soft reflected light caressing the face of a child, the dynamic reflection of the setting sun on the beach. As a photographer, I use my camera to share with others my vision of the world. I have been making photographs for as long as I can remember. From images of nature and my surroundings growing up in northern Germany, to photo-journalism in Hamburg, Germany. I always gravitated toward a career in photography. Immigrating to the United States in the 1970s, I built a reputation in portrait photography, and ran a...

That is their preferred eating method, William. Even the young eat that way. Of course I have only witnessed this in videos I own of the Sonoran Desert. They are a beautiful bird, but not a favorite, as they eat favorites of mine, baby quail, lizards, and horny toads, to name a few. This certainly is an extraordinary shot of this, Jurgen. Well done!
