Jorge Gonzalez Camarena (1908- 1980) was a prominent painter, muralist and sculptor.
He wanted to recreate the Diptych Mural of Life (1941) from the Guardiola building at the Bank of Mexico, removed and destroyed after the earthquake of 1957.
In this case, however, he preferred to execute a composition in three evolutionary sections that reflect a plastic interpretation of the history of Mexico. The first refers to slavery:
it questions post revolutionary agrarian policies through the presence of an anonymous peasant who lies inside a coffin and a naked female figure, covered with tattoos on his back, signs of prejudice and prohibitions. In the second, the act of liberation takes place: several men are stripped of their attachments representing the whole of humanity. In the last section, the mestiza woman who holds a seed of corn, symbol of wisdom and life, is finally directed to spiritual liberation. The mural "Liberation" was inaugurated in July of 1963.
