The now abandoned historic B&O Railroad Depot in Grafton, West Virginia, designed by M.A Long, a well-known Baltimore architect, and built in 1911 by J.J. Walsh and Son of Baltimore. At that time, thirty passenger trains a day stopped in Grafton and a large depot and hotel was needed.
In the l950's the Carr China Plant and the Hazel Atlas Glass factories closed. Both employed several hundred workers and soon passenger train travel declined and the depot and the adjacent hotel stood empty.
This monumental Beaux-Arts complex is an important example of a building type far more common in Europe than in America: a combination railroad station and hotel. Both buildings are faced with red brick and terra-cotta trim. The station, at right angles to the hotel, is recessed and, because of the slope of the land, rises two stories on Main Street and three on trackside.
