Artist's Description

The largest waterfall on the New River, Sandstone Falls, spans the river where it is 1500 feet wide. Divided by a series of islands, the river drops 10 to 25 feet.
Sandstone Falls marks the transition zone of the New River from a broad river of large bottomlands, to a narrow mountain river roaring through a deep boulder strewn V- shaped gorge. The falls form the dramatic starting line for the New Rivers final rush trough the New River Gorge to its confluence with the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River.
Established in 1978, New River Gorge National River was redesignated as New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in 2021. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along 53 miles of the New River from Bluestone Dam to Hawk's Nest Lake.

Photography, to me, involves seeing the light and capturing the moment: the colorful illumination in the sky just before sunrise; bright sunlight dancing on the bubbling current, the glint in the eye of a mockingbird, soft reflected light caressing the face of a child, the dynamic reflection of the setting sun on the beach. As a photographer, I use my camera to share with others my vision of the world. I have been making photographs for as long as I can remember. From images of nature and my surroundings growing up in northern Germany, to photo-journalism in Hamburg, Germany. I always gravitated toward a career in photography.
